1962 Porsche 356 B 1600 Super Twin Grille Roadster

The 1962 Porsche 356 B 1600 Super Twin Grille Roadster is among the rarest and most desirable open-top variants of the 356 series, representing the final expression of Porsche's classic lightweight sports car design before the arrival of the 911. Just 248 examples of the Twin Grille Roadster were built for the 1962 model year, all bodied by D'Ieteren Frères of Brussels, Porsche's final contracted coachbuilder for open cars. Part of the 356 B T6 generation introduced in late 1961, this model featured several important updates over its predecessors, including a larger front trunk opening, improved brakes, and a redesigned dashboard.

More subtly, the rear bodywork was modified to accommodate a unique twin-louvered engine lid, allowing for enhanced airflow to the rear-mounted, air-cooled flat-four engine, a detail exclusive to these final-year Roadsters and a key hallmark of the model's rarity. 6-litre engine, designated 'Super' in Porsche's hierarchy, delivering a perfect blend of spirited performance, mechanical simplicity, and long-legged touring ability. The D'Ieteren-bodied examples are known for their excellent build quality, refined details, and slightly more upright windshields, giving them a distinctive profile.

While the Roadster offered a bit less creature comfort than the Cabriolet, it rewarded drivers with a raw, connected feel — more akin to the original Speedster, but with improved practicality and chassis rigidity. -specification example was delivered to its original owner in Crown Point, Indiana, per its Porsche Kardex. One of the earliest known examples, it is just the fourth Twin Grille Roadster of the 248 examples to be produced.

Finished in its correct-as-delivered Bali Blue (6212) paint, it gleams with authenticity, matched by richly finished brown leather upholstery and a tan convertible top. Tecnomagnesio wheels wrapped in Michelin tires complete the stylish open-air appearance. Under the rear deck lid lies a correct air-cooled type 616/2 T2 1600 Super flat-four engine paired with a four-speed transaxle.

With 45 years of single enthusiast ownership and care, and documented by a copy of the Porsche Kardex, this is one of the most collectable and celebrated open-air Porsches ever produced.
