1940 BMW 328 Roadster

Throughout its long and storied history, BMW took a decidedly sporting turn in the mid-1930s. 0-litre 328 entered the scene in 1936, dominating its first race at the Nürburgring and going on to win at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1939 and the 1940 Mille Miglia. BMW marque historian Rainer Simons identified seven truly 'great' 328s fitted with sleek, lightweight bodies by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan.

This example, Chassis No. 85133, appears to have been among the first five or six prototype 328 BMW-chassis cars constructed by Touring in early 1939 — their purpose was to contest the 1939 Mille Miglia, cancelled by Mussolini. Research of the original paint color by Dr.

Jägers of Bornheim, Germany revealed traces of 'German Industrial Silver' — used only on pre-WWII BMW and 'Silver Arrows' Grand Prix cars. Its caretaker entrusted the body, chassis, and powertrain to noted Chicago-area restoration expert Fran Roxas, who rebuilt the engine and all mechanical systems. The potent engine bears a period 'Spezial' tag with dimensions and components of the 1939/40 Series I Mille Miglia cars, and is believed to be the only one of the seven cars equipped with a dry-sump engine.

Thoroughly documented by three accompanying binders of historical data, records, and photos, it also has its FIVA Identity Card. Acquired by noted Texas collector Jeff Moore in August 2017, then by the Grand Rapids Classics Auto Museum in August 2025. A streamlined crowning jewel among the museum collection.
