1971 Chevrolet Camaro Z28

Nicknamed the 'Super Hugger,' the second generation of Camaro debuted in 1970 — longer, lower, and wider than the first generation, and seen as much more of a driver's car. 7-liter V-8 engine, heavy-duty suspension, power-assisted front disc brakes, a limited-slip differential, and a rear stabilizer bar. For 1971, production and sales dropped significantly due to a 67-day corporate-wide GM strike and skyrocketing insurance rates for high-performance vehicles.

Rumors also surfaced that the 1972 Camaro would be the last, making the 1971 model more desirable today than most second-generation Camaros. Acquired by the Grand Rapids Classics Auto Museum in 2023 from Worldwide Auctioneers Spring Auction, this Z28 was previously part of the Charlie Thomas Collection in Texas — a ranch-based collection of 250 rare and exclusive automobiles. Believed to have been restored in the early to mid-2000s, this Z28 tribute Camaro is finished in Viper Red with black racing stripes.

According to its trim tag, it was built the third week of July at the Norwood, Ohio plant. Power comes from a 383 cubic-inch V-8 with long tube aluminum headers, backed by a Muncie four-speed manual transmission. 10 gears, disc brakes, 18-inch Crager wheels, and Street Fire multi-spark ignition.

The interior features black faux leather hi-back bucket seats, a Hurst shifter, upgraded Kenwood radio, custom dash with Auto Meter gauges, and tinted glass. As 1 of only 4,862 built in 1971, this is a low-production American pony car that will never lose its place in muscle car history.
