The need for an affordable car was originally formulated in pre-WWII Germany, with Ferdinand Porsche directed to develop a car that was affordable, simple, and capable of mass production. Originally called the Kraft durch Freude-Wagen, only 210 civilian versions were produced before WWII. ' By 1955, a million Type 1s had been produced.

A former resident of The Excalibur Motors Collection, it was acquired by the Grand Rapids Classics Auto Museum in the fall of 2025 via the Auburn Auction & Show by Worldwide Auctioneers.
